"Kara" means "empty" + "oke" is short for "Okesutora" or "orchestra" so it literally means "empty orchestra." Karaoke is an international sensation that started in Japan and refers to a festive activity in which people sing their favorite songs in accompaniment with professionally produced pre-recorded music. But if you ask anyone who has ever attended a karaoke event, they'll just tell you it means "a really really great time!"
